I love styling because it allows me to tell stories without words, to manifest a dream, and to make fantasies a reality. It appeals to the child inside me, who loves to make art and play paper dolls and dress-up. And it brings me into collaborative partnership with such an interesting array of deliciously demented creatives ~ strange, wonderful, fascinating people who challenge and inspire me. Recently I found myself among a really lovely lot of these, crafting a fantastical fairytale for Genlux magazine’s Spring 2013 issue. Here’s a little peek into the magical making of those images!

For meetings and dinners and parties, I’ll always be a high heels kind of girl ~ I just feel more ‘finished’ with a little extra lift. But when I’m really working ~ especially when styling a shoot ~ I absolutely have to be in flats. When you’re on your feet for 16 hours straight, constantly moving and running and bending and lifting, there’s no other option. My current favorites for location work (like a recent project shot in the desert around Palm Springs) are the boots Pamela Love designed for Nine West (above left). When I’m on a studio set, I’m all about a cool pair of sneakers ~ either my Nike Frees or the Missoni x Converse collaboration kicks (above right). However, by far my favorite accessory as a stylist is the cool new tool belt I picked up recently at Urban Zen.

I’d originally called it in to use as an accessory for an upcoming fashion story, but quickly realized it was much more necessary for me personally. I have a big rolling suitcase that I bring to every shoot that contains my ‘prop kit’ ~ basically anything you can think of to fix anything that could go wrong or be needed on a shoot, from nude thongs to heel liners to Tide sticks to Benadryl to bug spray to fishing line to straight pins and wire cutters (and everything in between!). But I like having the things I reach for most on my person at all times ~ like scissors, a lint roller, clamps and double stick tape, plus my cell phone and extra jewelry options. It’s like a super chic fanny pack that saves my day on set ~ I don’t know how I got on so long without it! There’s really nothing more modern than fuss-free mobility.

I really enjoy the process of putting together a fantastical visual story. I love the late nights spent in a champagne haze, dreaming up ideas, hoping to top whatever we’ve conjured up before. I love the manic days of running around town, trying to source the perfect clothes and props and accessories. I love seeing every little puzzle piece fall into place, as the vision starts to coalesce into something concrete. But it never becomes really real until the true muse is tracked down, till we find the girl who best exemplifies the character in our heads.

Every season there is a fresh influx of beautiful girls, each of whom beguiles you somehow ~ be it with a winsome gaze, languid limbs, an athletic attitude, groovy moves or an astounding sense of coolitude. You obsess over every one of them, but no one girl is right for every story. It’s like falling in love ~ when you know, you just know. Here is a peek behind the scenes, as we recently looked for (and found) the disgraced-princess-becomes-queen of our dreams.

The thing I like best about a photoshoot is not the finished product, it’s the process. It’s the never-ending evenings we spend dreaming up concepts; it’s the long days and late nights prior to shooting, which are engulfed in finding the appropriately transformative wardrobe and making the props and booking the cast and choosing the lights and the location ~ but most especially it’s those magical moments on set. It’s communicating with my photographic collaborators, working together to achieve the perfect shot. It’s connecting with the hair and makeup artists and the models, bringing them into the dream, helping them believe it too. Every member of the troupe must put on the same play. And so in the end it’s all of us, working together, believing in the vision and figuring out how to execute it and how to make it magical and beautiful and inspiring and transportive and worthwhile. It’s carving out a gateway through which an eventual viewer may find an escape.

What I really loved about shooting the commission for Lincoln was that it wasn’t an ad campaign or even a fashion editorial. It was just a story, and I had the chance to tell it with a few of my favorite fellow raconteurs.
